Today's Election-Free Zone: Slow Blanket in Progress :o)

Image
For those of you who read my blog posts via Twitter, sorry if I've been flooding you with old posts. The feed I used to use (Twitterfeed) is shutting down soon, so I've had to start a new feed (dlvr.it). I'm pretty sure it re-posted a lot of stuff right away. Apologies, too, if new posts tweet twice for a few days. I want to make sure the new feed is 100% working before I cancel the old feed.

So, I knitted someone a blanket last Christmas. It was my first ever non-washcloth knitting project and it was a massive undertaking, not to mention a great success.

And after I gave the blanket to its intended recipient... I missed it. :o)

So I decided to make a blanket for myself, slowly. I'm knitting 63 individual squares, each lined in black crochet. Here's where I am so far...

Most of the squares have a simple pattern of vanishing squares.

But some of the squares are specialer.

I'm honestly not sure how much I like it. It's sort of like a book; until I finish it …

Interesting Article About Asexuality

Image
There's an interview with Julie Sondra Decker at Salon today called "You’re about as sexually attractive to me as a turtle: Coming out as asexual in a hypersexual culture" that I found to be eloquent, thought-provoking, clarifying, and informative on the topic of asexuality. The last question in the interview, about how finding the right language for things can be clarifying and create the possibility to improve situations, is particularly interesting. Decker has written a book, just released, called The Invisible Orientation: An Introduction to Asexuality. Check the interview out if you're curious.

Separately, it's just come to my attention that my Twitter feed has not been picking up my blog posts since MAY, oops, sorry everyone. I'll make some time to figure this out and fix it in the next few days. Though I suppose the people this affects are the people who follow me on Twitter, which means they aren't reading this blog post, since presumably it's…

Fall Into Fantasy

Image
Hi everybody. Fall Into Fantasy is going on at Penguin right now, as you can see above. Unfortunately, I've developed an unexpected conflict for the 10/9 Twitter chat, so I won't be able to join it live, but do tweet your questions @PenguinTeen using #FallIntoFantasy and do it ASAP, because I'll provide answers ahead of time for someone else to tweet on my behalf. The other participating authors are Melissa de la Cruz (@melissadelacruz), Michael Johnston (@mrmikejohnston), Alison Goodman (@alisongoodman), and Morgan Rhodes (@morganrhodesYA), so ask them your questions, too. Have fun, everybody, and sorry I can't be there live!

Each author has also written a blog post about something to do with fantasy for a blog tour happening next week. The tour will start at The Story Siren on Monday, and I don't have many details about scheduling but do know that my post will appear on Thursday on The YA Sisterhood. I'll provide more info on that when I have it.

FAQ: Why don't you allow comments on your blog or involve yourself in most social media?

Image
A couple of years back, I closed comments on my blog and removed email access. When I started using Twitter as an amalgamation feed for my blog, I decided to make it clear in my profile that I don't read @-replies. And I'm not on Facebook. All of these were rather soul-wrenching decisions, I'm afraid -- firstly because I was aware that it would come across as unfriendly and unwelcoming to some readers, and secondly, because it meant I would stop receiving such wonderful notes and messages from fans of my books, stop having so many opportunities to connect with my readers. I asked for a lot of advice from friends and colleagues each time I made one of these decisions. Everyone I asked, even the people I expected to lean the other way, told me I should do it, because the people who knew me best could see how much social media was interfering with my writing.

The problem is that I couldn't do it halfway. If people were writing to me, I wanted to be there, reading and res…

Everyone's a Critic

The response of my two-year-old niece, codename: Isis, when she saw the ARC of Bitterblue: "It no have pictures in it."

Well, guess what, Isis? You're going to like the final version of the book better, because it does have pictures in it. The lovely Ian Schoenherr, who most recently did the art for The Apothecary, has created maps, castle diagrams, various Appendix illustrations, endpapers, the cover page, ornamental chapter openers, and, probably my favorite illustrations of all, double-spread part openers (the book is in five parts) for Bitterblue, and the final result makes me SO HAPPY.

If you "like" the Graceling Realm page on Facebook, you'll have access to some of the art, which is slowly being revealed there.

The process of working with my publisher and Ian on the art was fascinating. It was surprising -- and delightful -- to realize how involved I needed to be, and lots of fun, too -- I enjoyed every minute of it. Often, it wasn't until I saw a…

In Which I Am Neither on Twitter Nor on Facebook

Image
Hi there. This is your friendly non-tweeting and non-Facebook-using author here. I was rather surprised to stumble upon a Twitter account in my name this weekend, and even more surprised to discover a Facebook page in my name. I expect there's an innocent explanation for both of these accounts, and I'm looking into it. In the meantime, I just wanted to make sure that everyone knows that those accounts are not me. In fact, my only online presence is this blog, so if you see me appearing in any other guise, then it's not me.

That is all.
