His store is truly a "wonder". I've seen people ask one of the people working there for suggestions. "My nephew/niece/whatever loves to read. The last couple of books were blah, blah, and blah. Can you suggest what I might get as a gift?" They immediately take the person to the appropriate area and introduce them to several books. This is because...they all READ the books. Voraciously! I'd love to be there to see and hear you and Mellissa Marr. Unfortunately, planning to fly from south Florida takes a lot. Have a wonderful time and, if you think of it, tell Peter that Libby and Rick (Dodd and Beardsley) send their love.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4228273369846378320.post-30090880149761835212009-05-17T19:17:00.000-04:002009-05-17T19:17:00.000-04:00Lady of Shalott and Ash, I hope I see you there! ...Lady of Shalott and Ash, I hope I see you there! If you are ever in Western North Carolina, it would be awesome if you came to Malaprops. 'But why Po?'
It's okay, I love all the names. And also, I'm thinking about taking the train down to NYC to go to your booksigning. I just need to convince my mom. We haven't ever really been to the city, despite living not too far from it. It would be really fun, and I'd look forward to meeting you. I was VERY excited and have been meaning to drop by and say thank you, as I assume you were behind this? I am crazy busy at the moment reading up for the Sydney Writers Festival and Reading Matters conference—I am chairing panels at both—and Fire will be my reward at the end of all that. (My niece Lucy wants me to send it to her NOW, but she's going to have to wait!)

Thanks again. Can't wait to read it!

Judith

You can read about the panels I am chairing here:

http://www.misrule.com.au/s9y/index.php?/archives/330-Festival-Season!.htmlMisrulehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00005874586861016523noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4228273369846378320.post-79744202323595513322009-05-15T22:18:00.000-04:002009-05-15T22:18:00.000-04:00Hi Pens, yes, that's exactly it -- I don't think t...Hi Pens, yes, that's exactly it -- I don't think the writer should stand outside the book interpreting the book for people or explaining what she meant. The book needs to be its own answer and people need to be allowed to create their own interpretations. I get asked this a lot, actually, so I'm going to add it to my FAQ list. Thanks for asking!

CLM, I may be at the Penguin book for part of the time on Friday, but I'm not sure when, which probably isn't very helpful. I'm SURE I'll be doing signings in Boston in the fall, though!

Stefanie, thank you for keeping my terrible secret! :o)

Sarah, thank you, you're so sweet.

Artemis and Angie, you know what? I don't have a definition. I can't really figure out for myself what the difference is, and I never approach a book thinking of my audience as a particular age. Maybe it's YA if it's in some way a "coming of age" story? What do you guys think?

Have a nice weekend, everyone!Kristin Cashorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05560274772312684672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4228273369846378320.post-85532214940450623802009-05-15T20:45:00.000-04:002009-05-15T20:45:00.000-04:00The interview was terrific and it was nice to hear...The interview was terrific and it was nice to hear your perspective first hand. It must be hard to be interviewed - but especially over the phone! I don't know how you stayed focused - I would be doodling or eating or something and miss something important and totally give a quirky answer.
I'd be curious to hear the answer to A's question - I think it's a good one and would enjoy reading your definition. A great book is just that - a great book - regardless of the genre. It's fantabulous! I was listening intently and thinking, 'Oh, I have no idea how I would answer that!' And then it occurred to me that since the thing I want most is to get published, I might well have to answer such things some day. For a moment, it scared the tar out of me!

I do have one question for you: What makes a book YA? I mean, is it your characters age? Merely the fact that they're experiencing some things for the first time? What? It vexes me, not being able to pin down 'what' makes a book YA.

So love your 'I can't answer that' answer to Katsa and marriage. If I had a dime for every time someone asked me why I'm not married or dating, as if because I'm a woman of eligible age I should be doing one or the other, like it's an unspoken rule... I'm not dating. It is what it is.

All in all, awsome interview! It was fun to hear you talk about where it all came from! =..=Artemis Greyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10849091563671031929noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4228273369846378320.post-716132209071516252009-05-14T14:39:00.000-04:002009-05-14T14:39:00.000-04:00I am only able to attend BEA on Friday so am disap...I am only able to attend BEA on Friday so am disappointed I will miss you. I was interested in your comment about not being able to explain the subtext of your books. Can you expand on that? Is it because you want to encourage reader interpretation? As I've mentioned here before, Graceling was one of the best things I have read in a while, recommending it to everyone! :)pensnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4228273369846378320.post-14513170616119286642009-05-14T11:48:00.000-04:002009-05-14T11:48:00.000-04:00The interview is great!
