I watched it every Sunday, too!

Aimee, I agree about Leonard Cohen. He writes wonderful lyrics but then manages to mess them up himself... :o) Tia, I did enjoy your review, heh heh... Amanda -- I'll just wink at you. ;)

E.M., I have a local signing planned in October but nothing else is set up at this point -- I think we're in a holding pattern, waiting to see what unfolds. I'll certainly blog about upcoming things as they happen, though! And I hope to add info to my contacts page soon about how people can order signed copies from my local bookstore, if anyone wants to...

Mrmorse, I appreciate your insight into the Requiem -- this is the sort of stuff I love to hear educated people talk about. My own musical education is limited to 8 years of piano and one college class on Beethoven (and, of course, a lifetime of listening to music and to my father talk about music). That's not nothing, but it's obviously not always enough to appreciate all the intricacies of what I'm hearing...

Anyway, I'm going to listen to the 5th movement with especial attention next time!Kristin Cashorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05560274772312684672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4228273369846378320.post-90835262982110673082008-08-26T23:35:00.000-04:002008-08-26T23:35:00.000-04:00A comment about how great the Brahms Requiem is ob...A comment about how great the Brahms Requiem is obviously redundant, but I'm leaving one anyway.

One of the great things about it is how unlike the Mozart Requiem (or any Requiem based on the Latin Requiem mass text) it is. By selecting his own text, Brahms was able to create a secular Requiem with far more empathy for the mourner than the Latin text provides. No other Requiem has the opportunity for something like the Fifth movement, with the soprano solo supported by the chorus just wrapping the listener in comfort.

And that is just one of many great musical moments in the piece. I can (and do) go on at length about all the amazing things Brahms does in his Requiem.

The chorus I sing in is performing it next Spring. I'm very excited.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4228273369846378320.post-14082540279804535222008-08-26T11:01:00.000-04:002008-08-26T11:01:00.000-04:00I'm also partial to the Jeff Buckley version of "H...I'm also partial to the Jeff Buckley version of "Hallelujah." Did you know that the Leonard Cohen version has umpty-bajillion verses?

I have been listening to the Olympics. And at work I have several Pandora stations set up: one is folk-rock (Runrig, Oysterband, Jethro Tull) for when I'm simply inputting changes and don't need to think; one is Singing Folksy Ladies (Loreena McKennitt, Kate Rusby, Connie Devon) for when I don't mind a little intrusion (aka bending over my Levenger editor's desk but actually thinking about something different); and one called "soft" that is a weird mix of stuff like Qntal and Dead Can Dance plus Thomas Tallis plus Anonymous 4, which keeps my monkey mind busy while I'm working.

I love the sound of rain on a tin roof, baby giggles, the sound in Star Wars when Obi-Wan Kenobi turns off the tractor beam, and ocean waves.NoGrandmotherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01185188439798333946noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4228273369846378320.post-57213147634210148052008-08-25T16:27:00.000-04:002008-08-25T16:27:00.000-04:00I grew up in hurricane/tropical storm territory an...I grew up in hurricane/tropical storm territory and I can relate. I always enjoyed getting out of school and stomping up river-like streets (obviously I didn’t get your reader), but I don’t miss the power outages.

And you're right - the sound is amazing! It always made me feel insignificant in a very good way.

By the way, congratulations on all of the raving Graceling reviews! I can’t wait to buy my hardcover in October. Are you planning to do any signings or tours? Inquiring minds want to know. :o)

Ever enjoying your blog - EMAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4228273369846378320.post-56571289789655071662008-08-25T15:08:00.000-04:002008-08-25T15:08:00.000-04:00Yay for another starred review! But I do believe this was the longest tropical storm I ever lived through.

You might be amused at my "review" of the storm I wrote at Fantasy Debut. I like the Rufus Wainwright and John Cale versions, too. I keep meaning to check out other Leonard Cohen songs, but I feel like his voice sounds a lot like those chainsaws I've been hearing so much of in the past few days.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4228273369846378320.post-56884536557552143692008-08-25T07:02:00.000-04:002008-08-25T07:02:00.000-04:00Have you ever seen the BBC show of all creatures g...Have you ever seen the BBC show of all creatures great and small?
