A Birthday Poll

It's my birthday week!

If you were around for my last birthday, you may recognize this poll, so forgive me for the repeat. I have a lot more readers now than I did then, and how could I waste an excellent birthday poll?

Please vote; and if you're someplace other than my site and can't see the poll, just click here.

I had to go with the kangaroo. It made me laugh so hard, which is a nice thing because I am up in the middle of the night due to a VSTS (a very scary thunder storm). Unfortunantly, there aren't many kangaroos here in upstate NY, so I'd have to move to Australia or withing 25 miles of the Bronx Zoo. But I'd be worth it just to say "Kangaroo, your Master calls."

I'll just nip out into the street and pick up a kangaroo for you, Kristin. They are indeed very obedient creatures and make excellent pets.

I had to go with the yak. The golden hairballs would be handy, and I'm not in my bedroom all that much anyhow. Actually, it's so cluttered with piles of books, I wouldn't likely see the yak anyway. Hmmm, now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I lost a yak in there a few years ago. Maybe I could get baby yaks out of the deal... Ad with all that fur I'll never freeze to death...

The kangaroo seems like it has the fewest side effects.

I'm an Aussie, I just have to go with the kangaroo.

Happy birthday!

The seven league boots! The athlete's foot problem will help me only use them when I really need to.

HAPPY Bday week! (Last week was my mom, nana and grandfather's bdays - oh the Leo's).
I chose socks. I am a very low maintenance girl. Seems the easiest to purchase, wash, and store. :)
Although, I thought the invisibility cloak could be handy for robbing banks after hours...and the kangaroo would be neat to have if it's pouch was people sized and I could climb in and go for a ride.
But I'll stick w/easy this week. It's already one of those days...

Happy Birthday Kristin!

I went with socks. I like useful things and I feel as though I'm forever in search of a pair of nice comfy socks. Being a runner, I've tried my share of wacky ones too. Right now my favorite pair of socks are made out of bamboo. Really. They are currently the best socks ever on my list.

I went with the kangaroos, but only just. I'd go for socks, if they were handknit in my size.

It's my birthday this month, too - Yay for August! And Happy Birthday!

kangaroo. who wouldnt want that power. it could be my own personal backpack. wouldnt that be awesome? going to school with a kangaroo holding all my stuff instead of a backpack. nice.

Okay, y'all are cracking me UP with these comments... thanks to everyone! :o) (I chose the 7 league boots, just 'cuz I'm feeling very far away from a lot of loved ones today...)

I had to go with socks. I could use some socks right now. But...now I'm thinking I should have voted kangaroo. I don't think I could convince a kangaroo to carry anything for me, once I called it. I'm not good like that. But a kangaroo could be used for intimidation purposes. Surrounded by bullies? Call in a few kangaroos. The bullies don't need to know that I can only call them...

Also, I might actually have this kangaroo power! I wouldn't know. I've never tested it. I don't think I've ever been within 25 miles of a kangaroo. This is a great excuse for me to move to Australia. Or the zoo.

I voted socks, but I'm really partial to sockdreams.com

It's not that i'm not adventurous. Sure it's not.

I have to say, I stared at the poll for a while before voting. It was a three way time between socks, 7 league boots and of course, the kangaroo.

I chose the kangaroo in the end, it seemed like a great excuse to move to Australia- that and I just bought a couple of pairs of knee-highs the other day haha.

If I'd gone with the 7 league boots, I think I'd leave and never come back...possibly to Australia haha though I here New Zealand's pretty awesome too...

Happy Birthday Week!!! :D

I was thinking Seven League boots at first...but foot fungus...ew....

Socks for sure. What's good enough for Dumbledore is good enough for me;)

Easy choice: making anything I say come true while yelling through a foghorn in Fiddish while falling from a 4-story building...

The reason? I've always wanted to be multilingual. I'll be in a body cast for awhile but, in the end, I'll speak Finnish!

kristin cashore said...

Ah, the mysterious appeal of the kangaroo... and of socks!

I also love sockdreams... and Rebecca, I hear you, because I did once receive a pair of socks for my birthday, hand-knit in my size, and they are my favorite socks ever.

Laura, all you have to do is make sure that before you jump the first time, you have learned to say, "Long drops don't hurt me!" (or some such) in Finnish! :o) From then on, you'd be golden!

Happy Birthday!

I went with the kangaroo because uttering the phrase "kangaroo, your master calls" is boss. My kangaroo would be much better transportation to school than the bus.

Have a very happy birthday Kristin!

From a few of your devoted readers down here in Jax Florida ;)

Either the yak or the wish thing. All you'd have to do to use it effectively would be to pick a very tall building and learn how to say 'I am fluent in Finnish' and 'I can fly' while falling the first time. Being remarkably strong might also help. After that, though, you could use the magical foghorn within peril as you would know how to say anything you'd like and wouldn't fall to your death, since you can fly. Easy!

Sam said...

Definitely the wish, because if I get myself into a situation where I can use it well, I could do anything, although, if I mis-pronounce the finish it might suck abit....

Happy Birthday!! Many happy returns!

I would just love the ability to summon anything, so the ability to summon a kangaroo called to me in a creepy whisper. Now I really HAVE to visit Australia.

Happiest of birthdays Kristin!

I chose socks. Why? Well, because they could: a) give you athletes foot (which is sorta like wish number one without the cool leagues); b) socks could potentially be eaten by a yak - thereby causing a hairball (which may be closer to green then gold); c) you could make your foot and ankle invisible with a sock (not the whole you, but at least part); and d) you could make the sock into a kangaroo puppet and it would obey your every command!

I can't think of how the sock would teach you Finnish or grant you wishes, but there are LOTS of creative people here...maybe they have a suggestion.

:-D

kay i just realized something. i dont even know what seven league boots are. so...what are they?

Sarah said...

I live within a twenty-five mile radius of the World Famous San Diego Zoo, so I am totally down with having a kangaroo at my beck and call. Think of the possibilities! And the snoodiest of birthday wishes to you, oh snoodiest of pals! (If you'd gone with snood instead of socks in the choices, that would have, of course, trumped the kangaroo.)

Happy Birthday! I voted socks as I want something for Santa to put my pressies in at Christmas! ;0

My feet get cold a lot, and I'm sure now that you're back in New England, the winters there are going to be slightly different from Florida!

Happy Birthday Kristin, I hope you have a wonderful day, filled with lots of colorful socks.

Happy birthday week! Mine's next week. :D

I decided on socks. You can't have too many socks! Unless you can...or if they're perhaps not very good socks...or if they're dirty and/or smelly...

A. Grey said...

Itdependsontheday, seven league boots are boots that, when you're wearing them, allow you to travel seven leagues (roughly 21 miles, as one league is about three miles) in just one step. I learned about them from 'Howl's Moving Castle' :D

The kangaroo called to me. Honestly, how awesome would it be to have that power? You could make friends and influence people! I also agree with whoever mentioned the intimidation powers of kangaroos. It would probably freak me out if someone else did it.

the kangaroo summoning !! it's like having an awesome jumpy familiar. those things are strong and fierce!

Laura Lutz said...

I didn't even THINK about that, Kristin! Brilliant!

Now the drop won't hurt me AND I can speak Finnish? Well then, I'm more sure of my choice than ever so take THAT all you kangaroo people!

Willow Schnell said...

I'd love to learn Finnish, what a great excuse. (As long as I could get a fire rescue team to setup under me)

kristin cashore said...

Laura, come to think of it, I suppose you would evem have the power to take away everyone's socks and/or kanga powers, if you so desired! Though, "Take away everyone's kangaroo-summoning powers!" would be a weird thing to shout through a foghorn in Finnish while falling from a four-story building.

Laura Lutz said...

There is no way, virtually, to describe how hard I'm laughing. WOW. My Friday is made.

While I *totally* think I made the right choice, I would never go so far as to take away people's socks and kangaroo-summoning powers. That would just be mean. And kind of tyrannical. I vow to only use my wish-granting Finnish-speaking powers for good.

kristin cashore said...

ZOMG. Laura, it has just occurred to me that you could cure the foot fungus I got from my seven league boots!

Happy birthday Kristin, I live in Australia so I had to go with the kangaroo LOL.

Just finished Graceling and it was brilliant! Really one of the best books I've ever read! Can't wait to read Fire when it comes out.

I just spent two months as a foreign exchange student in Finland so I know some Finnish! It's an awesome country, so I'd definitely pick that option :) :) :).
